Biography

Thomas Helmers is a book artist, letterpress printer, and papermaker based in Seattle, Washington.

He received an MFA in Book Arts in 2016 from the University of Iowa Center for the Book. His work can be found in numerous public collections, including Yale University, the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Washington, Otis College of Art & Design, and University of Iowa.

Statement

My work explores the ways we build, break down, and reconstruct narratives—both personal and collective. I'm interested in the limits of language and image, and how they often fall short in capturing memory, emotion, and experience. When communication fails, what fills the gaps? Fact, fiction, or something in between?
